A recent study found social media is fueling young men’s body image insecurities, too. Much has been said about the negative impact of “picture perfect” social media imagery on young females’ mental health, but a study from health and fitness company Origym shows that young men in the U.K. are also being affected by unrealistic standards of beauty. According to the study, one in ten young men say their mental health has been impacted by social media, and one-third say they need to change their appearance to conform to social media standards. While YPulse research does show that social media is negatively impacting the way young females feel about themselves more than males, 39% of young males agree, “Social media makes me feel bad about my appearance” and 40% say “I wish I could look the way social media photo filters make me look IRL.” (Sky News)
