The most followed person on TikTok is no longer Charlie D’Amelio. Khaby Lame has “dethroned” the Gen Z dancer/influencer—by a few million. Currently at a whopping 144.6 million followers, the comedian has amassed his audience without ever having said a word. The 22-year-old, who is from the West African nation of Senegal and now resides in Italy, is raking in millions of views per post with the content young people love most. Lame’s feed consists of reaction videos, duets, stitches, and skits that all have a silent but relatable edge. When he first began making videos, the idea of bringing simplicity to TikTok’s (at times overwhelming) platform was appealing to him and his physically expressive reactions are what drive his viewership. YPulse research shows Gen Z enjoys watching comedic forms of entertainment the most and Lame is delivering that while proving he “doesn’t have to speak in order to be seen or understood.” (CNN, The Verge)
