Seventy U.K. companies are launching a 4-day work-week pilot program that is set to be the biggest trial of its kind in the world.

Seventy U.K. companies are launching a 4-day work-week pilot program that is set to be the biggest trial of its kind in the world. Millennial burnout was an issue before the pandemic, but COVID has only worsened the problem, leading young consumers to leave their jobs en masse and seek better work/life balance. In the U.K., 71% of workers now consider flexible working important to their job satisfaction, and a recent government proposal aims to give them the right to request unconventional hours from their employers from the get-go. In response to the changing demands of the Gen Z and Millennial workforce, companies and even countries around the world have been introducing initiatives to reduce workers’ hours by 20% while keeping their salaries the same—and a collection of U.K. companies are the latest to jump on board. Spanning financial service providers to fast-food restaurants, the pilot program will affect 3,300 workers and last for six months—and aims to determine whether the four-day workweek is a sustainable way forward.
