In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, Procter & Gamble is calling for people to respect Asian names.

May 24 2022

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, Procter & Gamble is calling for people to respect Asian names. According to a P&G survey, 78% of respondents do not consider names like “Yeong Joo Park” to be “American,” and Anglo-Saxon names are considered more “American.” Their research also found that 83% of respondents believe their names are important to their own identity, heritage, sense of self, and connection to family, while more than half of Americans have experienced their names being mispronounced, regardless of race or ethnicity. In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, P&G is raising awareness around the importance of learning and respecting AAPI names as “American” names. They worked with a team of AAPI creators to create the short ad “The Name,” which tells the story of a Korean American girl named Yeong Joo and her mom, who talk about the meaning of her name, and how it might cause others to see her differently. The campaign is also encouraging AAPI people to share the hashtag #OurNamesBelong and has partnered with AAPI organizations to develop education resources and tools to “help create substantive change.” (AdAge)
