Asian American employees feel left out of the workplace compared to other racial groups. According to a Bain & Company survey that examined industries in seven countries spanning North America, Europe, and Australia, less than 30% of employees in all demographic groups report feeling “fully included” at work. Asian men were at “the lowest end of the spectrum” at 16% followed by Asian women at 20%. The report’s findings suggest that Asian Americans are still impacted by discrimination and microaggresions that keep them “from ascending to upper management.” According to experts, the model minority myth (which “paints Asian Americans as compliant and hardworking”) often follows them into the workplace, making it harder for them to “self-advocate while also erasing their personal realities.” However, according to Bain partner Pam Yee, the data shows companies “are starting to have more open dialogues about inclusion.” (NBC News)
