Subtle Asian Dating is a popular Facebook group that has resulted in members getting engaged, married, and finding “a slew of long-term relationships.” We told you about the dating apps targeting BIPOC communities, but some BIPOC young singles are finding love directly on social media as well. YPulse’s relationships and dating research found that nearly a third of 13-39-year-old Asian consumers have dated someone they met on social media. Subtle Asian Dating launched three years ago as a spinoff of the Facebook group Subtle Asian Traits, which was a hub for memes and discourse about the Asian diaspora experience with more than two million members. Currently, Subtle Asian Dating has over 650K members and has become a “global matchmaking platform” and “birthplace of marriages, engagements, and a slew of long-term relationships.” Other spinoff groups like Subtle Queer Asian Dating+ have since launched. One of the most common ways to post on the groups is for a friend to share an “auction” post (the equivalent of a dating profile) on behalf of a single friend that includes photos and a list of pros and cons about the person being “auctioned,” so other members can reach out to the eligible single directly. While some of the relationships have started platonically, others have grown into something more serious. According to some of its Asian members, the group has been especially beneficial for those who live in predominantly White areas and want to connect with others from the same cultural background as them.
