Tinder users can now run in-app background checks to screen matches for possible harmful past behavior. YPulse’s dating and relationships research shows 33% of Gen Z and Millennials use dating apps, and Tinder tops the list of dating apps they frequently use. To increase user safety on the app (especially when it comes to protecting people against users like the “Tinder Swindler”), Tinder is rolling out the ability to screen matches for possible violent or harmful past behavior via in-app background checks in partnership with Garbo, a nonprofit that runs online background checks. Searches exclude information like drug possession and loitering, and won’t include personally identifiable information. Tinder users have access to two free background check searches (for every background check after that, they’ll be charged a $2.50 processing fee to fund Garbo’s operations), and they can perform searches via the blue shield in the app. If a match is detected for having a history of violence, users can report them to Tinder. Match Group is also working with the National Domestic Violence Hotline to connect users with trained advocates if they want to chat with a professional. (The Verge)
