Parents are sharing videos of young Black girls learning to love their hair bonnets after seeing characters that look like them on a Disney Junior show. Earlier this month, two separate videos showing young Black girls appreciating their hair bonnets after seeing an animated character wear one went viral: In a TikTok video that racked up four million views, Michaela Peacock showed her two-year-old daughter, Mila, who was previously ripping her hair bonnet off her head every night, watching Disney Junior show Rise Up, Sing Out that featured girls celebrating Black hair at a sleepover, while pointing at the screen saying “bonnet.” Meanwhile, Breanna Martin shared a video of her daughter on Instagram watching and dancing along to the same episode while wearing a pink leopard hair bonnet. In the video’s caption, Martin wrote “This is why representation matters! My daughter got so excited to wear her bonnet.” YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that nearly half of Black Millennial parents have had their child watch a TV show / movie because it centered around their race / ethnicity.
