Mattel’s new Barbie honors famed journalist Ida B. Wells. YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that more than half of Millennial parents have purchased a toy for their child to teach them about diversity. For Barbie’s Inspiring Women Series, Mattel launched an Ida B. Wells doll, to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which features the journalist in a bun and 1800s-style black dress. Wells was known for her role in actively exposing racism in the U.S. during the Civil Rights movement by writing about race and politics in the South, particularly segregated schools and lynching. Since Barbie launched the Inspiring Women Series in 2018, they’ve created dolls of “history-making women” including Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, and Frida Kahlo. While the doll has already sold out in several retail locations, it’s still available for purchase on the Mattel Creations site. The company said in an Instagram post: “When kids learn about heroes like Ida B. Wells, they don’t just imagine a better future—they know they have the power to make it come true.” (CNN, Today)
