American Doll released a Chinese American doll in response to the rise in anti-Asian racism and discrimination.

Jan 06 2022

American Doll released a Chinese American doll in response to the rise in anti-Asian racism and discrimination. YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that half of Millennial parents have purchased a toy for their child to teach them about diversity, while 42% say it’s important that the children’s entertainment / toy industry reflects diversity and is inclusive. In response to the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, American Doll created Corinne Tan, a Chinese American doll, as its 2022 “Girl of the Year,” to teach kids to stand up against racism. According to the brand, Tan is a “powerhouse skier” from Aspen, Colorado, who is “building the courage to respond to xenophobic comments.” To coincide with the release of the doll, American Girl will be donating $25,000 to AAPI Youth Rising, a nonprofit organization that teaches students about anti-Asian xenophobia. The company’s “Girl of the Year” dolls, which have been around since 2001, were created to reflect “the realities of the times—both good and bad.” In 2017, the “Girl of the Year” doll was Black, and in 2018, she was Chilean.
