Move over Bed Bath & Beyond, more engaged couples are going to Amazon to build out their wedding registries. According to a forecast by The Wedding Report, 2.5 million nuptials are expected to take place this year—marking a four-decade high—and Amazon currently holds the top position for retailers couples are registering at. A recent Baird survey found Bed Bath & Beyond’s listing penetration share of wedding registries is 30% (the lowest reading in six years), while Amazon’s is 45%. Target, Williams-Sonoma, and Crate & Barrel are also popular retailers for wedding registries. Amazon’s lead reflects the competition retailers face when it comes to keeping up with the company’s soaring sales, combined with the fact that couples, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are opting for experiences over goods when it comes to their wedding registries. Travel / cash funds have grown in popularity, and online registries on sites like Honeyfund and Zola have popped up to capture the experience mindset of young couples. YPulse’s wedding research shows 28% of Millennials have set up their registry online, and experts are betting on (another) wedding boom in 2022 as couples move forward with new and postponed celebrations.
