Gender neutral clothing is getting an inclusive (and fashionable) upgrade. As brands continue introducing gender neutral apparel lines, fashion designers are reconfiguring cuts and closures on clothing to ensure gender neutral fashion isn’t just beige and baggy, but embraces any individual’s silhouette and style. The Phluid Project is constantly updating its designs to include things like a raglan sleeve, which works well on most body types, thicker straps on tops and dresses that can hide the appearance of chest binders, and knitted fabrics to avoid sack-like designs according to the brand’s Chief Executive and Founder, Rob Smith. The Phluid Project has also introduced gender-nonconforming mannequins, giving consumers a more accurate depiction of how clothing might hang on trans and gender nonbinary bodies. While big brands like Abercrombie & Fitch are able to offer gender neutral collections in a variety of sizes, small brands are creating “adjustable” clothing designs made to fit all sizes. For example, Early Majority is incorporating new features to its online site that will let shoppers tweak their silhouettes and fit for the brand’s jackets and coats. Early Majority also added zippers and material to the front of its jackets that can be removed for a tighter fit or expanded for a looser style. According to Lyst, searches for “unisex,” “gender neutral,” and “gender fluid” increased 33% between January and June, and YPulse’s Gender Blur trend research shows that 49% of young consumers have bought gender neutral clothing.
