Facebook wants to be more than a social network. As the social platform deepens its investment in building out the metaverse (the idea of a massive, centralized virtual community), Facebook is reportedly changing its name in a move that will show consumers how the tech giant isn’t just “a social media company [but] a metaverse company,” according to Mark Zuckerberg. Rest assured, Facebook the social media app isn’t going anywhere—the rebrand will likely position it under its umbrella of products including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus. Facebook recently announced Horizon, a “Facebook-meets-Roblox” VR company, and has enlisted more than 10,000 employees to build consumer hardware (like AR glasses) that could be part of the tech company’s metaverse plans. YPulse’s most recent social media research shows that Facebook is leading with Millennials (73% of Millennials and 32% of Gen Z use Facebook). (The Verge)
