Paris’ iconic luxury department store La Samaritaine has gotten an experiential glow-up. Established in 1870, the sprawling 200,000 square foot art deco shopping mecca shuttered in 2005 due to building safety concerns. Now, 16 years later, La Samaritaine is reopening its doors after a $750 million renovation and reorientation toward experiential retail that is designed to draw in young consumers. YPulse’s recent WE shopping and retail survey found that the majority of young Europeans prefer to shop online, giving brick-and-mortars a run for their money. But 70% also agree that shopping should be an experience, with branded cafes/restaurants, pop-ups, and live events among the top experiences they’re interested in. With a curated selection of exclusive brands, multiple art galleries, a spa, pop-ups, and a five-star Cheval Blanc hotel, La Samaritaine promises to draw young Europeans who are looking for more than just retail.
