Fast food chains are testing a partnership with TerraCycle’s Loop program to see if consumers are willing to return reusable packaging. YPulse’s sustainability research shows that 58% of Gen Z and 47% of Millennials feel brands should be creating more eco-friendly products, and fast food chains including McDonald’s, Burger King, and Tim Hortons are attempting to solve their packaging/waste issues by working with TerraCycle Loop (a program that collects, cleans, and redistributes reusable packaging). The brands have committed to pilot-test the program to see how consumers respond to reusable packaging and their willingness to return it. Burger King locations in N.Y.C and Tokyo will be the first to test serving burgers in reusable sandwich boxes and using reusable cups for drinks, with consumers being charged a refundable deposit for the package that they will need to scan in the Loop app and return to Burger King to get their money back and earn Loop collection points. Tim Hortons is testing a similar initiative in Toronto, and McDonald’s began a test with Loop this summer offering consumers in the Midlands region of the U.K. reusable coffee cups. (WSJ)
