Netflix’s creative team and cast for the upcoming live-action adaptation Avatar: The Last Airbender is made up of Asian and Indigenous actors. After 2010’s live-action film adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender received backlash for whitewashing its cast, Netflix is making their own adaptation of Nickelodeon’s popular anime show with a live-action series. But this time, Netflix filled their creative team and main cast with Asian and Indigenous talent: Albert Kim serves as the showrunner, while Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio Tarbell, Ian Ousley, and Dallas Liu have all been cast in lead roles. According to Kim, “This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people. Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in.” YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that 70% of 13-39-year-old BIPOC consumers say more TV shows and movies should star non-White actors and actresses, while 53% of 13-39-year-old BIPOC consumers believe stories centered around BIPOC individuals should be written by BIPOC individuals.
