Gen Z is turning to digital content to find meaning and purpose in their lives. According to a new survey from Current Forward, 47% of Gen Z and 41% of Millennials do not consider themselves religious. The study defined religion as “offering a sense of mental and physical wellbeing as well as culture and tradition; a way to explain the unexplainable; creates a community and social connection,” and Gen Z and Millennials say taking care of their wellbeing is an attribute of religion that’s most important to them. But the exception here is that they’re connecting with music, entertainment, and other online activities to fulfill this need instead of through religious communities or practices. YPulse’s religion and spirituality research shows that 69% of young people have found meaning outside of traditional religion, and online communities have been a top way for them to fill important spiritual needs through their hobbies/interests.
