Hollywood and Sony Pictures are turning PlayStation and Xbox franchises into movies and TV entertainment. Following the upcoming premiere of Uncharted, a film based on the 14-year-old Sony Entertainment Interactive and PlayStation video game series, Sony Pictures is putting the TV and film treatment on more of its Sony Interactive video game series. The video games heading to the big and small screen include The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and Ghost of Tsushima. Game-to-film adaptations are happening elsewhere as well, with Xbox’s Halo coming to Paramount+ early next year, the creators of HBO’s Westworld producing a science-fiction show for Amazon based on the Fallout game franchise (one of Gen Z & Millennials’ favorite video games), Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment producing an animated Mario movie, and Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed, Resident Evil, and Splinter Cell already available on the platform (with more on the way). YPulse’s gaming data shows that 71% of Gen Z and Millennials who play video games like seeing game characters in other media (e.g. movies, TV shows, etc.), and this industry trend could be a major draw for young viewers.
