Reopened schools are finding out what works best for a post-COVID future. With the pandemic still ongoing, schools have been experimenting with ways to open safely, while some have already been opened for in-person instruction for months. Those who have opened have learned some “hard-earned conclusions:” Masking, ventilation, social distancing, and regular testing are the most effective ways to reduce the transmission of the virus in schools, while tasks like daily temperature checks and the deep cleaning of surfaces have become lower priorities. Meanwhile, teachers, not students, are most likely the primary spreaders of the virus in grade schools and three feet apart, instead of six feet, is now being touted as a safe distance for children to stand from each other. Kids are most at risk during lunch time, and tools like portable air cleaners and carbon dioxide monitors are helping with that. Finally, some are finding that “hybrid learning” might be risker since students are potentially exposing themselves to more people. (WSJ)
