The NFL and Nike are pledging $5 million to grow girls’ flag football.

Feb 11 2021

The NFL and Nike are pledging $5 million to grow girls’ flag football. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, rising concerns over concussions in youth sports have contributed a 9% drop in football participation in the last decade, a loss of more than 100K athletes. But tackle football remains one of the most popular high school sports in the U.S., and one million more boys than girls play high school sports. While co-ed flag football for children has grown with a “big push” from the NFL, girls high school flag has “lagged behind.” The NFL and Nike want to “narrow the football gap” through donations of up to $100K in product to state athletic associations that offer girls flag football as a sport. Several NFL teams are also supporting girls’ flag football initiatives—which could in turn increase female fans. (WSJ)
