Colleges are spending millions of dollars in preparation to reopen during the pandemic. As campuses around the country make plans to reopen for upcoming semesters, some are bringing in miles of plexiglass, thousands of face masks, hand sanitizer stations, and other “pricey expeditions.” For employees, schools are trying to get protective gear, cleaning supplies, equipment to take students’ temperatures, and are making plans for routine hourly wipe downs of doorknobs, which are already running them into “millions of dollars.” The additional expenses come as many colleges are already facing budget cuts due to the school closures.
