Over a billion children are out of school because of COVID, and many will not return. According to the UN, 90% of the world’s student population were at home by mid-April. Now, local governments and authorities are doing what they can to prevent kids from dropping out entirely. In Europe, some officials have been sending students tablets and buying internet connections for families in need. Meanwhile, U.S. cities are finding various ways to gauge attendance and “measure” interaction and engagement. For example, electronic devices are being handed out so students can “tap into online classes” and social workers are getting involved to find missing students. For online summer classes at low-performing schools, virtual tutors and more instructional hours are being added and prioritized. (WSJ)
