Millennial parents are giving toy houses elaborate makeovers for their toddlers. Toy houses are being renovated to look more like real houses—sometimes even matching paint colors to the family’s actual house—and the projects can cost hundreds of dollars. Many of the playhouse remodelers want their kids’ toys to be pleasing to look at, and don’t want to display “the red, yellow, and green plastic look” of traditional toys. Wanting more social media-friendly toys around the house is a clear motivation, but some side benefits include reselling the mini-masterpieces, and extending the life of the playhouse to keep plastic waste out of the trash.
