“Depression” and “anxiety” are becoming popular music lyrics for the most stressed generation. CDC-reported rates of depression and anxiety diagnoses of U.S. kids are on the rise, and so are the mentions of the two mental health terms in hip-hop lyrics, according to Genius. Both mental health terms hit a peak in 2016, and judging by the recent release of “I don’t care,” in which Justin Bieber sings “I’m crippled with anxiety” and Selena Gomez’s “Anxiety,” in which she’s “holding hands with [her] depression”—the dark content trend will continue.
