Instagram added a “mute” feature so users can curate their feeds without unfollowing anyone. No one knows when they’re muted so it’s ideal for cleaning up feeds, keeping “frenemies” in the dark, and for boosting those true digital friendships up the algorithm. Facebook and Snapchat have similar capabilities (it’s one of the new Snapchat features young users didn’t altogether hate), showing the growing trend of giving users back some control over the content they see—and don’t see.
