Airbnb and boutique hotels are outperforming big-name hotel brands—and likely stealing their customers. While bookings across the hotel industry as a whole rose 23% from 2015 to 2016, Airbnb boomed by 49% and boutique hotels by a close 43%. The report from 1010data also found that 20-30% of major hotel brands’ lost customers are choosing Airbnb and boutiques instead, while only 12-18% are staying at another major hotel group. Hotels are also losing bookings to online travel agencies, making it more difficult to build a loyal customer base. (MediaPost)
