Facebook has released a Messenger app for kids, to give under-13-year-olds their first steps into social media. On Messenger Kids, parent approval is required at every turn, from downloading the app to setting up a profile and adding contacts. Swearing and inappropriate images are even detected via AI and won’t be sent. But there’s also fun stuff, like augmented reality filters and (carefully curated) GIFs—which may just hook young users into switching over to a full account when they grow out of the kids’ platform.
