MTV is bringing Unplugged back to life for a new generation, because “[e]verything ’90s is cool again.” The network is making “minor tweaks” to the classic show with an amped up digital presence and a young, social media-beloved star for the first episode. Shawn Mendes caught his break by making it big on now-defunct Vine and has almost 40 million followers across Facebook and Twitter. The traditional TV aspect is what drew his manager to book the gig though, because an episode “event-izes it in a way online can’t” and lets Shawn play for a lot longer than six seconds. (LA Times)
