Despite Millennials giving the box office a boost earlier this year, overall summer revenues are down, and in this unsteady time for the big screen, some of Hollywood is working on a way to release movies for rental just 30-45 days after they hit theaters. Comcast, Apple, and Amazon are all working together on a new, premium video-on-demand service that would charge $30 to see a movie that was on big screens just a month ago. But it’s a controversial move: unless major theatre owners get on board, the new service will need big studios in the industry on its side, or else risk “mutually assured destruction” for both big-screen and small-screen releases.
