The viral Unicorn trend started in the makeup aisle, and quickly progressed to food, frappuccinos, and floaties—with searches for the term reaching an all-time high in April. So what’s behind the obsession? Some say it has “everything to do with nostalgia” (as we outlined as well), and now unicorns are synonymous with rainbows, glitter, and all things unique. But the timing of the trend may not be coincidental: “around the same time that the U.S. election went into full swing—the unicorn became a signifier of happy, fun-loving, and cute.”
