For their first steps into virtual reality, Viacom won’t be using any of their well-known characters and properties. Instead, the brand is experimenting with games, interactivity, and music—being created through collaborations with artist and musicians. At SXSW this week, Viacom Next gave audiences a first look into their original VR experiences, including The Melody of Dust, which is described as “the first VR music album.” Players are placed in a room where a mini-tornado spins, and can pick up random objects to toss into the tornado to create sounds, eventually making up a melody or rhythm.
