Google is exploring the possibilities of Tango, its augmented reality platform, to bring museum exhibits to life. The Detroit Institute of Arts is the first institution to partner with Google, offering attendees Tango-enabled devices that use digital overlays to “peer inside sarcophagi to reveal mummified bodies, visualize lost architecture like the six-story Babylonian Ishtar Gate, and restore ancient limestone reliefs to their original, bright coloring.” The devices also offer engaging quizzes and games. 2016 was the year that augmented reality surprised everyone, and it will no doubt continue to evolve this year.
