A group of Google employees are envisioning a more female-empowered emoji future. As pointed out in Always’ “Like a Girl” campaign, female emojis are currently stereotypical—brides and painted fingernails—and lack the career representation that male emojis are given. The Google group has submitted a proposal to Unicode Consortium that features female doctors, factory workers, scientists, and more, asking, “Isn’t it time that emoji also reflect the reality that women play a key role in every walk of life and in every profession?” Proposals are currently being considered for the next batch of emojis, which will arrive on phones mid-2017.
