Hotels are going minimal to cater to the younger generation, but it has ended up frustrating more experienced and older travelers. Young travelers spend less time in their rooms and prefer to work from sociable spaces, which benefits hotels who have drinks and food to sell in their lobbies. In response, hotels are taking out desks, closets, dressers, and bathtubs from rooms—all things that older generations value. One seasoned traveler finds the lack of desks a deal breaker: “When you are 25 all is well and you can roll up in a ball and sit anywhere, but when you turn 45, 50 or older, your body doesn't like those types of positions.” Although there is backlash, hotels are still going ahead with the redesigns which have cut costs, including less cleaning staff.
