In 2013, suicide was the second leading cause of death for 15-34-year-olds, and one in three young adults reported signs for depression. Statistics like these could be behind the American Academy of Pediatrics’s new recommendation that 11-21-year-olds be tested for depression each year. While mental health clearly needs to be made a larger priority, critics warn that misdiagnoses and false positives can lead to patients taking antidepressants with possibly fatal side effects.
