First-generation college students are struggling. Only 40% of students who are the first in the family to attend college are expected to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in the next six years, compared to the 55% whose parents went to college—and finances are not necessarily their biggest problem. These particular students face “academic, social, and cultural” issues and crippling “self-doubt.” Their “unique challenges” include less access to classes and information to prepare them for college culture, and, for some, guilt about leaving their families when they are needed at home.
