The growth of dual income families and need for early childcare has led parents to introduce children as young as four to the education system. But are pre-schools doing more harm than good? Many programs now implement more tightly scripted teaching methods, straying away from an exploratory “idea-based curriculum,” to focus on “seat work.” Expectations of the youngest students have also increased, and 80% of teachers now expect kindergarteners to read by the end of the school year. According to researchers, these changes could lead to kids’ “losing their enthusiasm for learning.” (Atlantic)
