When you think fun, exciting, unexpected experiences that attract Millennials, you likely don’t immediately think museums. Art museum attendance dropped 5% from 2002 to 2012, so some institutions are introducing new technologies to Millennialize the museum experience and attract and engage young visitors. This year many are installing beacons, which allow patrons who’ve downloaded a smartphone app to be tracked while they’re exploring. The beacons and app will provide the user with information about the artwork they are in front of, including audio, videos, and reviews, and allow visitors to easily post images on social media. The new technology is giving more museumgoers a voice and the result is a “cross between curating and crowdsourcing.” (New York Times)
