These days, even first graders are being asked to think about where they will go to college. The idea of college as a goal is being engrained into young minds at an unprecedentedly early age, and efforts are being made to follow up the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” with “How do you plan on getting there?” Elementary and middle school students are being exposed to campus tours, activities like creating mock applications, and Kids2College, a national college-awareness program. Some view the efforts as premature and bound to cause anxiety, while others think that exposure to the idea of higher education is vitally important to children’s success. (New York Times)
