Twitter, a platform not even a decade old, is continuing to change the way we talk about, interact with, and watch TV. Ypulse’s social media tracker survey showed that as of September 2014, 29% of 13-32-year-olds were using Twitter on a daily basis. Many are joining in on the communal experience of sharing their viewing experiences by live tweeting shows, and according to Neilsen’s new model of analyzing promotion activity and Twitter TV activity, this has heighted engagement and helped to boost ratings. While they say this does not “necessarily mean that Twitter TV activity causes larger audience sizes,” they do believe their data can help networks and advertising agencies gauge and predict a broadcast or cable show’s success.
