Getting kids excited about science is the best way to produce more STEM graduates—particularly female ones. But doing that has more to do with what happens at home than what happens at school. In a survey of current STEM students, the majority said that, “science experiences with a family member or a childhood activity piqued their initial interest.” So while teachers and classroom time have an impact, parents need to do the initial work to get their children interested in the field.
