School lunch trays have become a political battleground. In 2010 the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act became a law with the goal of making school lunches more healthful to fight the rising childhood obesity problem. But as specific rules—like reducing salt and “starchy vegetables” (aka French fries)—have been introduced to try to reach that goal, food companies have spent millions lobbying to change them. Battles are being waged over whether pizza sauce can be counted as a vegetable, and many students have reacted negatively (and loudly) to the changes. (NYTimes Magazine)
