Is sexting the new first base? According to a recent study, teens who have sent or requested nude pictures are more likely to engage in sexual behavior within the year, making it a “gateway” to “going to the next level.” However, sexting was not found to be linked to risky sexual behavior over time. Researchers say this indicates that sexting is “a new ‘normal’ part of adolescent sexual development.” It should be noted that the majority of teens are not sexting: a 2014 Ypulse bi-weekly survey found that 21% of 14-17-year-olds say they have tried sexting.
