Cellphones in classrooms are many teachers’ nightmare, but in NYC Mayor De Blasio has vowed to lift the cellphone ban currently in place in schools. Parents want to be able to reach their kids at any time, and the argument is that having a phone on school property is a “safety issue.” At schools where the ban is enforced, many kids pay local adults $1 or $2 a day to hold their phones, and then retrieve them when school is over.
