Bolthouse Farms is using junk food tactics to get kids to eat healthy. The largest producer of baby carrots and juices in North America is co-opting some of the marketing that makes kids want chips and sugary cereal, selling veggie snacks and smoothies in colorful packaging and carrots in chip-like flavors like ranch and chili lime. Sesame Street has also offered the free use of their characters, so fruits can be decorated with Elmo and Big Bird to “lure kids in.” Another company found that putting superhero characters on healthy snacks at a school salad bar increased consumption 250%.
