Millennials are often accused of “slacktivism:” Liking, hashtagging, and posting about causes online instead of donating to them. The recent, wildly popular, #IceBucketChallenge for ALS has faced similar criticism, but it has also increased the donations to the ALS Association to four times as much as this time last year. Examining the cynicism around the viral phenomenon, and the actual results of the challenge, is prompting some to defend slacktivism and the benefits of viral marketing for relatively unknown causes.
