While the concept of being “Catfished” may sound shocking, it's actually nothing new. Teens have long lied about their identity online, just in different ways. They've given false information upon entering chat rooms, particularly about their age, sex, and location, as a way to experiment with identity. They may not have taken these fake personas outside of the chat room, but they were still misleading others online. (Jezebel)
