Vaping is So Gen Z, Cigarettes are So Millennial

Gen Z is supposedly a “mild” generation when it comes to vices, but they didn’t crush smoking the way everyone once thought they would

  • Over a quarter of 18-24-year-olds vape weekly or more often
  • While cigarette use has remained similar (if growing just slightly) it’s not nearly as popular as vaping
  • Young adults know vaping is bad for them—but fewer think it’s as bad as cigarettes
Gen Z has a reputation for avoiding the risky behavior that previous generations, like Millennials, ran wild with in their teens and twenties. If you believe the headlines, you might think this generation doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs. But over the last five years, young adults’ smoking habits have seen some notable changes since Gen Z grew up. YPulse called out in 2018 that though Gen Z’s risky behaviors were at an all time low, vaping was their signature vice. At the time, 35% of teens told us their friends were vaping. Now, those teens are in their early twenties, and despite efforts to curb the vaping “epidemic” among young people, they haven’t quit.  In YPulse’s new Gen Z Vices trend report, we dig into the realities of young adults’ “bad” behavior, from typical vices like smoking, drinking, and drugs to their new struggles and indulgences.
