The ABG (Asian Baby Girl) aesthetic, characterized by features like long dyed hair, tanned skin, tattoos, and intense makeup, has gained popularity on TikTok and social media. Its origins are debated, but it’s believed to have emerged among the Asian diaspora in the ‘90s, influenced by African-American hip-hop culture. While initially associated with Asians living in the U.S., the ABG trend has now become a growing sub-trend for young people in China. Chinese influencers and social media platforms like Xiaohongshu have embraced the look, leading to a significant increase in the sale of ABG-related clothing and products. The appeal of the aesthetic lies in its association with a Westernized influence and today it looks like sporting a “tan, intense makeup, as well as street and clubbing-inspired outfits and hairstyles.” However, some critique the ABG aesthetic as a restrictive stereotype and challenge the conventional model minority myth of Asian Americans. Nevertheless, the growing influence of the ABG aesthetic is being felt in China, and future iterations of ABG and other multicultural Asian aesthetics will reflect the evolving roles and representation of Asians overseas.
