Kids of Asian immigrant parents have made their culture’s food the most popular dishes seen across social media.

Jun 13 2023

Kids of Asian immigrant parents have made their culture’s food the most popular dishes seen across social media. An analysis of Google trends by grilling website FoodFireFriends found that “Chinese, Thai, Indian and Korean food [are] among the top five most searched cuisines in the U.S.” now, and research from the blog The Picky Eater found that “the foods most commonly posted on Instagram [as of] 2023 [are]— after Italian in first place — Japanese, Indian and Korean, based on hashtags.” Both scholars and content creators say this shift has been heavily fueled by the children of Asian immigrants, specifically those who are showing off various cuisines with pride regarding their identities, which has helped shaped the way their traditional food is being perceived online. YPulse’s The End of Foodie Culture (As We Know It) trend report data shows that about a quarter of Gen Z and Millennials say they’ve tried viral recipes on social media and over a fifth say that one of the food trends they’ve tried is matcha flavored food or drinks.
